History to repeat tonight?

Bayern Munich meet Barcelona tonight in the first of this season's Champions League semi-finals. Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time these two European heavyweights have met in European competition. There have been six previous competitive meetings with Bayern coming out on top in the head to head, having won three games to Barca's one.

2008-09
Champions League Quarter-final first leg: Barcelona 4-0 Bayern Munich
At the quarter-final stage of the Champions League, Pep Guardiola's side had the tie sewn up by half-time of the first leg. Goals from Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry and two from a certain Lionel Messi enabled Barcelona to coast through second half at the Camp Nou.
Quarter-final second leg: Bayern Munich 1-1 Barcelona
Bayern started the second leg strongly, however, but despite taking the lead through Franck Ribery's goal early in the second half were unable to push on. A goal from Barcelona's Malian midfielder Seydou Keita drew his side level on the night and put an end to any lingering hopes Jurgen Klinsmann's men had of making the most remarkable of comebacks.

1998-99
Champions League Group Stage: Bayern Munich 1-0 Barcelona
1998 saw the clubs drawn together in a Group D also containing eventual winners Manchester United and Brondby. The first meetings took place at the Bavarian club's old home, the Olympic Stadium, in late October. The home side edged a close game 1-0 with Stefan Effenberg finishing from close range in first half stoppage time.
Group Stage: Barcelona 1-2 Bayern Munich
The German team also took the spoils in the return match at the Camp Nou two weeks later. It was the hosts who took the lead though through Giovanni's penalty after referee Pierluigi Collina ruled that the striker was felled in the area. Bayern hit back in the second period and claimed the victory. They equalised through a goal from Mario Basler before a poked finish from Hasan Salihamidzic late on secured the win, 2-1.
1995-96
UEFA Cup semi-final first leg: Bayern Munich 2-2 Barcelona
Whilst both sides are now very much amongst the European footballing elite, 1996 saw both sides having to battle in out in the UEFA Cup. They met at the semi-final stage with Bayern Munich taking their place in the final after an enthralling tie. Barcelona will no doubt have felt confident of progressing after earning a creditable 2-2 draw in the first leg in Munich. They took an early lead as Oscar Garcia finished off a great flowing move. Two quick goals shortly after the break put Bayern in front. Firstly Marcel Witeczek slotted in before Mehmet Scholl finished at the second attempt. Romanian Gheorge Hagi gave Barcelona the edge though with his goal with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Semi-final second leg: Barcelona 1-2 Bayern Munich
Bayern revelled in the role of underdogs and led the second leg 1-0 at half-time through full-back Markus Babbel. Bayern settled the tie late on with Marcel Witeczek's deflected effort finding the net after a swift counter-attack. Ivan de la Pena struck in a free-kick two minutes from the end but it was too little, too late for Johan Cruyff's side as Bayern saw the game out to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
