Xavi confident of overseeing deficit

XAVI admits Barcelona will have to pull off something spectacular if they are to overturn their 4-0 Champions League hammering by Bayern Munich.

The history books do not read well for the Catalan giants as no team has progressed in the European Cup after losing the first leg by four goals.

And the midfielder, looking ahead to the semi-final return at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, said: “We have to work a miracle. But we must try because we wear the badge of Barcelona.”

Dani Alves has also rejected claims that Barcelona are over-reliant on Lionel Messi.

The Argentina forward, who has been struggling with a hamstring injury recently, looked way below his best against Bayern.

And the Germans took full advantage thanks to two goals by Thomas Muller and one apiece from Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez.

“The debate on our Messi dependency only appears when we lose,” said Alves.

“It will be difficult to turn this around. But if we have to fall, let us do it with our heads held high.”
