Arsenal have been linked with another raid on Barcelona’s famed youth system, after an article in the Mirrorclaimed the Gunners were looking at signing defender Julio Pleguezuelo Selva.
The 16-year-old is a highly rated defender, and is understood to be interesting several clubs, who could look to sign him before he turns professional at Barca.
Arsenal have taken advantage of this rule before, signing Cesc Fabregas from the Catalans when he was just 16. The midfielder went on to become an Arsenal great, as well as their captain from 2008 until he rejoined Barcelona in 2011.
Other less successful names have made this journey. Fran Merida was hailed as the next Fabregas when he joined as a teenager, but never managed to nail down a place in the first-team. Youngsters Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral are currently in the Gunners’ youth team having joined recently from the Nou Camp.
Arsenal have been linked with a number of big names ahead of this summer’s transfer window, but it is worth remembering that Wenger likes to bring in and nurture young talent, so a move for Selva could certainly be on the cards.
