Barcelona denied by Wenger

Many doubted whether Arsenal’s decision to invest £12 million in Thomas Vermaelen due to several factors. However, the Belgian has gone on to become one of the important players at Arsenal. He is now the captain of the team after the departure of Robin van Persie. Vermaelen, though, seems to have had his head turned in recent months. There has been a lot of speculation that Barcelona will be coming in with an official offer in the summer.
Barcelona reportedly have made Vermaelen their primary transfer target in the summer, as they look to replace the ageing Carlos Puyol. In a recent interview given to talkSport, Arsene Wenger said that he was extremely sure that Vermaelen will remain as an Arsenal player. Vermaelen’s position at the club has been speculated a lot since the defender was dropped from the crucial North London derby against Tottenham.
After failing to lift a trophy in yet another season, pressure is on Wenger to deliver the results for the first time since we arrived at Arsenal. The fans have been demanding the club to splash the cash on experienced high-profile players. The club will certainly not see the departure of Vermaelen as a good sign, as they have lost several top players like Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas in the last few years.
Speaking recently to the press during the international break, Vermaelen refused to admit that he saw his future at Arsenal. Vermaelen has not only proved that he is a very good defender, but that he also has an eye for goal as well. Barcelona have been relying on midfielders like Mascherano and Alex Song to do a job at centre back in the absence of Puyol.
